2 more to go.

I feel so much relief after submitting 2 assignments on Tuesday. I now have 2 more assignments to submit and 1 exam to complete next week. As always, I told myself at the start of this semester that I would apply myself and try to get the highest marks I could, it gets to this point of the semester and I am just so tired that I just want to submit assignments hoping they are enough to pass.

As I prepare for my exam next week I went looking for a few ways to relieve stress and found this article.

Hope everyone else is feeling good about the end of the semester!

ICTs used on prac.

Well the semester is almost done so I thought I would look back on my ICT use while on prac. The classroom I was in had an interactive whiteboard which for the most part was very helpful. Unfortunately I couldn’t connect my computer to the whiteboard because I didn’t have access to the school network but I was able to use my mentor’s computer. The whiteboard did need to be calibrated before any interactive activity that the students would be taking part in, but my mentor teacher was very used to this.

The classroom also had 3 iPads and 5 netbook computers which the computers used for Maths activities and reading eggs. The computers and iPads were mainly used in small group rotations and they do take a bit of setting up. Each student has a different login and it is time consuming as it was a prep classroom the students need a lot of assistance getting set up. Although a great ICT tool, they weren’t always used to transform student learning… Something I would work on I think if I had a bit more time.

I also had access to a full set of bee-bots while on prac. A great resource and it fit in well with the unit I was teaching in Maths-Location and direction!

ICTs used on prac.

Semester almost done.

It is coming to the end of the semester and although I have other assignments due which I should be focusing on… I began the week 15 learning path last night. While completing the last course barometer I was made to consider my final thoughts on this subject… How my feelings have changed from the start of the semester. I genuinely have loved the way this course is set out, I have kept more up to date with this subject than other other this semester because we are made accountable for it. I actually wish other subjects were set out in a similar way, I find it more achievable to work through several moodle books rather than being given a whole module which you are expected to read and always forgetting where I am up to.

Thought I would share some more resources… I used Topmarks so much on prac. It is a great website with a great range of interactive activities for all different subjects. I found an interactive activity was a great way to engage students either at the beginning or end of the lesson. Its amazing how engaged students are when you put that screen on! I found some of these interactive activities a great tool for formative assessment also.

Semester almost done.

Week 3 done.

I have to say, prac has absolutely flown by. Being in a prep classroom, the days are so packed full and there is no spare 10 minutes during a lesson to just sit down and think so the time just gets away from you. Although I had a really positive experience, I am glad that prac is done simply because I am soooo tired. I really need to catch up on some sleep and also I really need to get my assignments done. I have 4 assignments and 1 exam over the next 10 days but at least I can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I will write some more about things I learnt on professional experience in more blog posts but for now, I thought I would share a resource that my mentor teacher shared with me. It is a website called Teachers pay teachers and it is a great library of resources. Some are free and others do need to be paid for, but my mentor mentioned how helpful it can be to help with ideas and resources.

Until next blog.

Week 3 done.

Week 2 done.

After 2 weeks in a prep classroom, I can say I am loving working with the younger students. They just provide so much entertainment! I have to make sure I keep the lesson going because half the time I feel like I could just sit and listen to the students tell me funny stories. I never would have thought of myself as a prep teacher but this prac has definitely changed my mind. It helps having a great mentor who has been giving me valuable feedback. On our interim report from last week the decided upon goal was for me to work on was essential skills. This is a program used by the school which focuses on behaviour management strategies. I am looking forward to this last week of prac although prac finishing means that I have to start my 3 assignments which are due next week! It’s going to be a big week but I am looking forward to it.

Until next blog.

Week 2 done.

Week one done.

I feel so much better after reading fellow students Leah and Lana‘s blogs and seeing I am not the only one that is absolutely exhausted after our first week of prac! I come home at the end of each day wanting to go straight to bed but have lots of lessons plans to do! I am wondering where I am going to find the time to start my 50% assignments that are due a couple of days after prac finishes. My first week went well, some lessons went much better than others. After teaching a couple of ok lessons on Wednesday, I had one go amazingly on Thursday which really boosted my confidence and I couldn’t stop smiling. Had a couple of lessons go just ok on Friday as well so confidence isn’t quite as high. No major fails just yet, but lots of good feedback which will help me to improve. So far I have used the IWB for  2 lessons and the kids absolutely love the interactive activities. I have been finding a fun activity to do at the end of lessons, which helps me get a gauge on how well students understand what they have learnt. The school I am at has a set of bee-bots and I have borrowed them for maths lessons on location this week. I have never used them before so I am lucky the school has them available.

One really cool ICT that the deputy principal introduced me to is called osmo. It is a great tool that you connect to an iPad and has its own set of apps. It can be used to transform teaching many subject areas, my only concern is it is mainly a one student activity. Unless students are taking turns I am unsure how to use it in a whole class lesson.

Busy weekend ahead!

Until next blog.

Week one done.

First Day.

What an adventure.

My school is amazing, the classroom is amazing and my mentor is amazing but I have realised after the first day that I really didn’t think enough about how different prep is to upper primary. My previous pracs have all been in upper primary classes and I felt really confident with my teaching ability. Because of this, I went into today mainly feeling excited. After watching how the prep classroom runs, I am now very nervous about teaching. My main concern at the moment is simply how to teach prep students, without even considering how I am going to transform learning through the use of ICTs. Any people with prep experience out there, I would love some pointers!

At the moment the teacher uses ICTs for programs like reading eggsmathletics and literacy planet. There is an interactive whiteboard and a couple of class iPads.

Until next blog.
